Knicks wish they had pick to deal for Anthony

Donnie Walsh spent the summer spending his monumental cap space to bring in 10 new players, including five-time All-Star Amar'e Stoudemire and a legit point guard in Raymond Felton.
But, ironically, the Knicks president indicated yesterday what he needs most to make the Knicks a title contender is a future first-round draft pick to use in a Carmelo Anthony trade.
The Nuggets seek at least one first-rounder included in a package for Anthony. Walsh traded the Knicks' 2012 pick in the Tracy McGrady deal, and have only their 2014 pick available to trade under league rules.
"I need to go out and see if I can get one," Walsh said. "I don't know how to do that. You always want to keep first-round picks."
Reports have Anthony's agent Leon Rose stepping up the pressure on the Nuggets to deal Anthony before training camp, though Denver wants to play it slow. Anthony wants to be traded to the Knicks, but the Bulls, Nets and Rockets, who own that Knicks' 2012 pick, are in the mix.
Danilo Gallinari, Anthony Randolph and Wilson Chandler are three young players the Nuggets might consider, but the Nuggets recently told a Knicks official that without a first-rounder, they don't have enough assets to make a trade. Last month, there was a report Walsh was trying to trade for the Pacers' first-rounder. (The Knicks are not permitted to trade their 2011 or 2013 first-rounders because teams can't go two straight seasons without owning a pick).
Walsh admitted regret about shipping the 2012 pick in the T-Mac deal.
"I didn't like doing it," Walsh said. "The night before, I felt I don't like doing this, but we're going to do it. I'll second-guess myself."
The cap-clearing trade in dealing Jordan Hill and Jared Jeffries opened cap room for two max players. But they signed only one max in Stoudemire. Without the T-Mac trade, the Knicks still could have squeezed in Felton.
After two years of LeBron James speculation, Knicks brass, with players reporting to camp tomorrow, still has to listen to fans talk about 'Melo and not the current squad.
"Until we can prove we can win and win at a high level, we'll always have the talk," coach Mike D'Antoni said. "Donnie has his job to keep improving the team, but I'm really excited about who we have and [am] not even thinking about looking down the hallway. We're very content about the people we can put on the floor this year. That can't happen until we start winning and [then] the talk will go away."
The Knicks are concerned about giving up too much in an Anthony deal. They'd likely have to part with two of their three young guns -- Gallinari, Randolph and Chandler.
"We have to see what we have right now, but part of my job is to see if a deal can be made to get [an All-Star] player like that and not give up too much," Walsh said. "If that player is available and you don't have to destroy your whole team, you'd consider it."
Status quo isn't wine and roses, despite the team's belief it will be in the hunt for an eighth seed. Neither Walsh nor D'Antoni would say missing the playoffs means the season is a failure.
"At the end of the year, we'll all know whether it's been good or bad," D'Antoni said. |
