What my agent had to say about the lockout back in July.
“Rod: Right now, the lockout has no meaning because no one is feeling any pain. The two sides are so far apart but there is no urgency now. The NBA, as it always does, proposed to change rules on ‘blood’ issues such as guaranteed contracts, a hard cap and getting back escrow money which the players expected to receive. The players do not understand why there is a fuss. Supposedly, TV ratings have never been higher, attendance has improved, franchises are being bought and sold for record amounts. They ask, ‘how can it be that 22 of 30 teams are losing money but they are still willing to pay me $35 million for my 9 PPG average?’ The truth is real attendance is down, that is, the money derived from attendance is down as teams deeply discount tickets. So, the players have been willing to give but not much so far because without pain, without missing paychecks, they will not come to understand, as the world now does, that we are in a deep economic recession. The NBA talks about giving 30 teams an equal chance to win a championship. Yet, they will not share revenues with each other as football does. How much more equal can you get if Memphis and Oklahoma City are taking deep runs through the NBA playoffs? It really comes down to discipline—do teams have the discipline to stick to a budget and say no to mediocre players asking for a lot of money and do players have the discipline to withstand missing not one or two paychecks but potentially a year’s worth? We will see. Time has shown that the players generally blink first and it is the sport which suffers the most.” — Bill Neff (July 1, 2011)
