Kobe Bryant Retiring?
Kobe Bryant age is 34 years old, and he has been in the NBA for about half of his life. Kobe has logged over 51,000 playing minutes in the NBA, however, rest assure Los Angeles Lakers fans, Bryant isn't going anywhere for the near future.
Of course the 14 time All-Star has contemplated how and when he would like to end his career, but when Kobe Bryant was asked by the media about his retirement plans on Tuesday, he acknowledged that he has at least two to three years left. Bryant went on to say
"I said when I was 17 that I'd be done when I was 35. So this shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. It's inevitable. It's gotta come. I'm not going to play for 25 years."
I know it seems almost impossible to think of the Los Angeles Lakers, or even the NBA, without Kobe Bryant. However, it is also almost equally impossible to think that any one man could continue to keep up with the physical and mental work that it takes to play in the NBA at an elite level for as long as Kobe has.
When reporters asked Kobe Bryant what he plans to do after basketball, Kobe said while laughing
"What the hell do I know? It's three years from now guys. I'm not like counting down the days. That time will come. It's inevitable."
Until that time comes, Kobe Bryant is completely focused on challenges such as integrating his new teammates, Dwight Howard and Steve Nash, into the LA Lakers system and winning number six, as in NBA Championships. Not to mention the fact that he needs to keep himself in tip top shape to make sure he continues to play at the level we are all used to him playing at.
On top of all that, probably Kobe Bryant's most important duty is to get the most out of the Lakers' new center, DH12. Bryant admitted that the best way for him to teach Howard is to have Dwight observe how he plays and practices.
Dwight Howard participated in five on five, full contact drills on Tuesday for the first time since coming off of back surgery during the offseason. Kobe Bryant has said that he is very impressed with what he has seen from Howard so far. He simply wants to see more from Dwight more often.
The bottom line is, for Kobe Bryant to continue to play at the level he has played at over the past decade, it will take a tremendous amount of focus and effort. If at any point Kobe is unable or unwilling to put in the time and work that is necessary to be effective, he will walk away from the game.
