"With nothing tangible on the horizon, Stefanski has begun contacting agents about free-agent guards who might accept a 1-year contract and fill a role as a combination backup and mentor to Lou Williams and first-round draft choice Jrue Holiday.

That list, according to the source, includes - in no particular order - Jason Hart, Carlos Arroyo, Bobby Jackson, Juan Dixon, Tyronn Lue and Brevin Knight. In a curious twist, Jackson and Lue are also clients of Andy Miller.

A little background:

* Hart, 31 years old: He played 28 games for the Los Angeles Clippers and 11 for the Denver Nuggets last season, finishing with a combined average of 2.0 points and 1.2 assists.

* Arroyo, 30 on July 30: He last played in the league with the Orlando Magic in 2007-08, appearing in 62 games, including 20 starts. He signed a 3-year contract with Maccabi Tel Aviv in Israel, but has an out in the deal that allows him to return to the NBA.

* Jackson, 36: He has been in the league since 1997-98, and appeared in 71 games last season with the Sacramento Kings, making 10 starts.

* Dixon, 30: He averaged 5.2 points and 2.4 assists in 50 games with the Washington Wizards last season.

* Lue, 32: He has been in the league since 1998-99, with career averages of 8.5 points and 3.1 assists. He appeared in 30 games with the Milwaukee Bucks and 14 with the Orlando Magic last season; he was deactivated when Jameer Nelson was added to the active roster in the playoffs.

* Knight, 33: He has been in the league since '97-98, and appeared in 74 games last season with the Utah Jazz."

Andre Miller négocie avec New York

"We're in a situation where we have a young nucleus of guys who have playoff experience, but we're going to grow with them," said Sixers general manager Ed Stefanski. "And to go long term on a contract with an older point guard, we don't see that as being a viable option."

[...]

"We have made an offer to Andre and Andy Miller," Stefanski said. "But they're looking for a better offer from other places. And I'd say right now we're in the mode of if there is a sign-and-trade that makes sense for both parties."

[...]

If no sign-and-trade arrangement can be worked out, or if eventually Miller walks, Stefanski said he feels confident giving backup guard Lou Williams a chance to run the team.

"Lou Williams is going to have an opportunity here. We've been grooming him for four years," Stefanski said. "We gave him a contract last year to play basketball, so he'll have a great opportunity."

Stefanski said the Sixers would also look to see how first-round pick Jrue Holiday progresses, as well as "obviously going out and looking for a guy at that position, too."

Added Stefanski: "I think we'd look for a veteran who would help and compete for that starting position."

So are Miller's days as a Sixer over?

"We're going to look at options," said Andy Miller. "But we hope the intent is cooler heads will prevail. . . ."

The 76ers are exploring a number of options at point guard in the event that they are not able to re-sign Andre Miller.

Sources claim that Miller and his agent, Andy Miller, are looking for a contract worth more than $10 million annually over three or four years.

However, Philadelphia would prefer to give the point guard, who will turn 34 in March, a shorter deal.

Free agent point guard Mike Bibby's agent contacted the 76ers to determine their interest recently, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.

There was discussion of a possible one-year deal for Bibby, which would allow him to hit a more lucrative free agent market next summer.

76ers' offer to Bibby was for 1 year
By Kevin Tatum

Inquirer Staff Writer

In an effort to entice point guard Mike Bibby to join the 76ers, team president and general manager Ed Stefanski offered the Atlanta Hawks' free agent a one-year deal this week, said a source who was close to the situation. But Bibby apparently wasn't interested and ruled out the Sixers on Thursday.
With his own free-agent point guard, Andre Miller, apparently shopping his services, Stefanski is seeking a player who can run the team next season while 2009 first-round draft pick Jrue Holiday develops. However, a Miller return is not out of the question.

Stefanski spoke with Miller's agent Wednesday, when NBA free agency began, and another source said the two had gotten nowhere.

Miller is believed to be seeking a three-year deal for an annual $10 million, his salary last season.

Bibby, paid about $15 million last season, plans to re-sign with Atlanta for three years, according to an NBA source.

The major sticking point between the players and the Sixers seemed to be the length of a deal. Miller is 33, Bibby 31.

Andre Miller is 76ers' No. 1 concern

[...]
Miller, who last season averaged 16.3 points and 6.5 assists, is represented by Andy Miller, who has said his client's No. 1 option is to remain with the Sixers.

"He's the main free agent, an important free agent," said Sixers president and general manager Ed Stefanski. "Neither of us is going to be at each other's doorstep at 12:01 a.m., but we will talk on July 1. There's no doubt."

After Miller, Stefanski will fill the remaining gaps - the complementary pieces - to form the 2009-2010 roster.

There are nine players under contract, plus first-round pick Jrue Holiday. Last season, the Sixers had 14 under contract, including center Jason Smith, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in July. That means the team knowingly entered the season with 13 healthy players.

Now, it seems that Miller's status affects most subsequent moves. And there are three options: Miller re-signs, Miller re-signs and is immediately traded, or Miller walks and signs with another team.

What would it take for the Sixers to re-sign Miller?

One source has said Miller will be seeking around $10 million a year, which is what he earned last season, and that he will more than likely desire a minimum contract length of three years.

The Sixers have the ability to sign Miller for more money than any other team, but, of course, Miller's demands must mesh with the Sixers'.

With backup guard Lou Williams hoping for a starting opportunity and Holiday earmarked as a point-guard-in-training, the Sixers will likely weigh the advantages of keeping an effective and solid but aging point guard against either a sign-and-trade, or allowing Miller to walk.

If Miller re-signs, it appears the rest of the Sixers' moves this summer would likely be role-player, minimum-level contracts, like the ones signed last year by guards Kareem Rush and Royal Ivey, forward Donyell Marshall, and center Theo Ratliff. Ivey's agent, Keith Glass, said his client might still re-sign with the Sixers despite opting out of his contract earlier this month.

The Sixers' guard situation is clearly dependent on Miller, but they will likely need to sign a big man to fill the role vacated by Ratliff and power forward Reggie Evans, who was traded.

"The other guys are pieces," Stefanski said. "We're going to fill in some more spots to create depth, but they are not going to be an Andre Miller type of situation."

A sign-and-trade involving Miller would be a prearranged deal involving two or more teams in which the Sixers sign, then immediately trade Miller for a player - or players - whose contract matches.

Stefanski said a sign-and-trade was "a possibility."

This could benefit Miller because the Sixers can sign him for more money. And it could benefit the Sixers because they wouldn't lose Miller's value.

In layman's terms: The Sixers are over the salary cap. If they do not re-sign Miller, they cannot offer his salary to another player on the free-agent market. Per NBA rules, the Sixers are allowed to re-sign their own guy.

Other than going after Miller, the Sixers' free-agency flexibility includes veteran-minimum contracts and the mid-level exception, the value of which will be released tomorrow but is expected to be between $5 million and $6 million.

If Miller signs elsewhere, these aforementioned contracts - the veterans' minimum and the mid-level exception - are all the Sixers can offer.
[...]
