76ers set to interview Jordan tomorrow
By Kate Fagan

Inquirer Staff Writer

According to a source close to the situation, the 76ers will interview Eddie Jordan tomorrow.
Another source confirmed that the two parties have already spoken via telephone and that Sixers general manager Ed Stefanski would meet face-to-face with the coaching candidate tomorrow.

"He needs a coach, and I'm a coach that's looking for a job," Jordan told the Associated Press last night.

Stefanski and the Sixers said that they had no comment on the coaching search.

On Tuesday, Jordan interviewed in Las Vegas for the Sacramento Kings' vacancy. Afterward, Jordan said publicly he also would speak with the Sixers.

A source close to the 54-year-old coach has indicated that between the two gigs, Jordan would prefer the Sixers because of their immediate ability to compete, as well as their proximity to his home. He grew up in Washington, D.C., and played basketball for Rutgers University.

Jordan is under contract with the Washington Wizards through next season and is owed approximately $4 million.

The Kings interviewed Paul Westphal yesterday.

Jordan has been in the mix for the Sixers' vacancy since Stefanski fired Maurice Cheeks on Dec. 13. Jordan's name surfaced again Monday when Stefanski announced that Tony DiLeo, Cheeks' midseason replacement, had withdrawn his name from consideration to continue as coach.

Stefanski and Jordan worked together for four seasons with the New Jersey Nets - Stefanski as an assistant general manager, Jordan as an assistant coach. During that time, the Nets reached the NBA Finals twice.

Jordan coached the Wizards from 2003 until he was fired 11 games into this season. He previously coached the Kings in the 1996-97 and 1997-98 seasons.

His career record is 230-288, including a 1-10 mark before Washington fired him just over six months ago.

Jordan is known as a coach who is adept at teaching and running the Princeton offense, a system predicated on backdoor cuts, ball movement, and passing.

Collins' chances. TNT analyst Doug Collins has expressed interest in the Sixers job, but Collins' agent, John Langel, confirmed last night that neither he nor his client had heard from Stefanski.

Langel also made sure to correct a mistake.

On Tuesday night, the Associated Press attributed a quote to Collins in which he said he had spoken to the Sixers "two or three times" about their coaching vacancy. Later that night, he called the quote a "miscommunication" and apologized to Stefanski.

Langel said the former Sixers star did not agree with the attributed quote.

As for still not hearing from the Sixers, Langel said he did not believe it was an indication of the team's interest.

"These things normally are a process," Langel said.

A possibility? If Stefanski is interested in Boston assistant Tom Thibodeau, who is under contract with the Celtics, Stefanski must request permission from Boston GM Danny Ainge. A source close to the Celtics confirmed that Ainge has promised Thibodeau he would OK any requests.

No word. Calls to Avery Johnson's agent went unreturned. Johnson is a studio analyst with ESPN who previously coached the Dallas Mavericks.

Bob Ford : "Then, there was the matter of finding positions for them all. Let's see, if Samuel Dalembert had to be the center and Brand had to be the power forward, where were the minutes for Thaddeus Young unless Andre Iguodala went to the backcourt? And then, what about Willie Green, and how should Speights be used? And, yes, we want to run, but how do we run with Brand and Dalembert on the court?"

Who might make it on to Stefanski's list?

* Doug Collins: Through John Langel, Collins' agent, it has become clear that Collins has a real interest in coaching here, in part because of his passion for the city in which he played his entire career and because he would be close to family members. Collins, regarded in the highest echelon of TV analysts, has coached the Chicago Bulls, Detroit Pistons and Washington Wizards and has what some people believe to be a virtual photographic memory for game details.

* Eddie Jordan: The assumption is that Stefanski would be interested because he worked with Jordan when both were employed by the New Jersey Nets. Stefanski said yesterday that he didn't necessarily have to have a history with a candidate, but that he did have to have a comfort level. Jordan has been strongly rumored as a candidate to return to the Sacramento Kings.

* Mark Jackson: He's on the list because of his skill in directing teams as a point guard. He has shown a strong interest in coaching, even though he has remained in the TV booth.

* Mike Fratello: Pencil in his name because speculation has been that he would very much like to resume his coaching career. He was interviewed here once before, but showed little inclination to want to coach Allen Iverson.

* Jeff Van Gundy: Like so many coaches, he's a different person in the TV booth. Relaxed, affable. Like Fratello, when the Sixers looked into him before he was put off by the team's centerpiece. But like all former coaches, there's always the lure of coming back.

* Tom Thibodeau: He's respected as the defensive guru of the Boston Celtics, but even though the Celtics won a championship in 2007-08, Thibodeau - a young Sixers assistant during the long-ago John Lucas era - stayed in place.

* Avery Johnson: He's tough, demanding, controlling and would bring a different dynamic to the bench.

* Jay Wright: I'm not even comfortable writing in the name of the Villanova coach. Certainly not now. I think someday he'll take a look at the pros, but not now. *

"Stefanski said he would love to hire a big-splash guy for his attendance-challenged franchise, but only if he is the right guy. He offered no hints on what might be coming. He said the guy should be hired by July 1, the start of the free-agent signing period, but would not commit to any other timetable."

DiLeo out as Sixers coach

By Kate Fagan

INQUIRER STAFF WRITER

Tony DiLeo withdrew his name from consideration to return as head coach of the 76ers and will return to his previous position as senior vice president and assistant general manager, Sixers president and general manager Ed Stefanski announced today.

"Tony and I had a meeting scheduled for this afternoon, during which time he informed me of his decision that he would not return as head coach next season," Stefanski said. "I want to thank Tony for the commendable job he did this season under some unique and difficult circumstances, including leading us to the playoffs."

DiLeo took over for fired coach Maurice Cheeks on Dec. 13, 2008 and finished the season 32-27. The Sixers lost in the first round of the playoffs to the Orlando Magic.

"Some names, rumors, reasons for speculation, etc. Remember, this is speculation.

1.) Eddie Jordan, formerly the Washington Wizards coach. He worked with Stefanski while Stefanski was in New Jersey. Thus the connection. Jordan's name has been mentioned for this spot, as well as the Sacramento Kings job.

2.) Jay Wright, coach of Villanova. You couldn't make a bigger splash than hiring Jay Wright from an in-town university fresh off a Final Four appearance.

3.) Doug Collins. The Chicago connection (think, Iguodala), and his reputation as a hard-nosed coach, makes him a top choice.

4.) Avery Johnson. We've heard this name many times.

5.) Jeff Van Gundy. You can't do much better in terms of discipline, focus.

Like we said, it's impossible to nail down candidates because right now the job is still DiLeo's and former NBA coaches, heck all coaches, refuse to step on the toes of a fellow coach -- it's like crossing the picket line.

Soon we'll know more."

"[...] Former Wizards coach Eddie Jordan's name has been thrown around. He worked for Ed Stefanski with the Nets.

Some sources close to the team say the Sixers need a coach who commands respect, is a former player but not a player's coach, and is more strict than former Sixers coach Maurice Cheeks. Someone similar in style to Pistons coach Michael Curry.

Dalembert's contract is almost untradeable, but it feels as if his time anchoring this defense has ended.

After the Sixers' Game 1 victory in Orlando - perhaps the most uplifting, emotional win of the season - the team practiced at a local Orlando sports complex. The night before, Dalembert had not played in the fourth quarter. Translation? He was a non-factor in the buzzer-beating victory.

As the players pulled off their flip-flops and tied their sneakers, all sat together, joking and talking, except Dalembert, who sat about 20 yards away, his headphones on, engrossed not in his team, but in his BlackBerry.

On Friday, Dalembert refused to admit he wants out, but his actions throughout the season - including a trade request at the all-star break - seem to say otherwise.

Miller did not attend Friday's season-ending team meeting. After Thursday's loss, he said he would wait to see whom the Sixers select in June's NBA draft before making a decision.

Miller says he cares only that he "has a job."

Initially, Miller's absence to the team meeting seemed to indicate his desire to sign elsewhere, but his agent has since reassured his client wants to remain a Sixer. Would Miller's return be best for this team?"

This team says its identity is fastbreaking, fueled by defense, but Miller is a poor on-ball defender, a guy who does what he can on the weak-side, but more often than not leaves his team in a rotational scramble.

Thursday was embarrassing and disheartening, but no matter what words the Sixers have said since, nothing was more revealing than what we saw on the court."
