Haha ^^.

Green Street » What we learned from Celtics second preseason game

We may as well start the season now because Rajon Rondo is clearly ready. Rondo repeatedly torched Milano’s defense, burying his first seven shots, including a 3-pointer and four free throws in the first quarter as the Celtics left Europe with a split of their exhibition schedule after a 105-75 victory. Everyone goes under screens on Rondo and everyone knows that when he’s making jump shots there’s basically no way to guard him.
It’s way too early to tell if Rondo has conquered his shooting demons — especially at the free throw line where he made all 10 of his attempts in two preseason games — but it’s worth pointing out that he shot a respectable 39 percent on his jumpers from 16-23 feet last season. Still, the early returns are encouraging and Rondo looks like he’s ready to take his game to another level this season.

GTR IS THE BOSS !!!

"His IQ is very high," Kevin Garnett said of the rookie power forward. "I watched him a couple of times while he was (at Ohio State), and we saw a little of what he can do skill-wise. When you play with him you can actually see the IQ." Paul Pierce landed on the same spot. "I think he has a great basketball IQ," he said. Neither player was asked about Sullinger’s basketball intelligence. No leading questions here.

Green Day: Jeff Green starts off year on a positive note
By Jeff Clark on Oct 5, 6:10p

If anyone needed a great start to the season it was Jeff Green. There are few players on the Celtics facing more questions than him. The Trade, the heart problems, the contract, it all adds up to a lot of scrutiny. Heading into camp he stated that his goal was to be more aggressive. It looks like he found the "go" button, ...with an assist from Doc Rivers.

In the first half Green was pretty solid. He was doing all the Jeff Green things that he does good but not great. There were a few highlight plays and he ran the break well, but it wasn't anything to write home about (or write a blog post about for that matter).

Enter Doc Rivers. His team was down 7 heading into the 4th quarter and he had already played his starters and rotation guys as much as he would want in a game they were treating as an exhibition. So it was time to throw the end of rotation guys out there and let them play. But with Wilcox nursing a bad back the numbers said someone from the top of the rotation had to be out there with them. Green has young legs and is probably eager to play, so why not him?

I'lll go a step further though. I'll bet that Doc wanted to put Jeff in a position where he was clearly the best player on the floor and clearly the leader of the offense. Make him the go-to guy and run the offense in a way that features him. Basically forcing him to be aggressive. If that was the plan, it worked to perfection. If it wasn't, well, it all worked out well anyway.

Green looked for his shot. He drove the lane and finished around the basket. The defense had no real answer for him. He was even the go to guy in the final seconds when they still had a chance to steal it. He came up short on those few plays, but that doesn't discount the excellent 4th quarter he had.

Scalabrine compared him to James Worthy - at least in terms of his body type and athleticism. Obviously that's a lofty bar to reach for, but you can see a potential for similar types of games. Again, he's really going to be valuable on the break and it sure looks like Rondo is excited about pushing the ball up the court.

It was just one game - and really one quarter - against a European team to boot. But it is hard not to be very pleased with this first effort from Jeff Green. We'll need plenty more of that if we want this year to go well.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DARKO seventh fresh start !

Darko is taking advantage of his "seventh fresh start." As he's said, he's no longer trying to prove himself as the second pick of the draft, but instead focusing on how he can contribute to a championship while working withing the framework of his talents and the Celtics' needs.

"I tell him every day, 'You're no longer Darko. You're a Celtic,' Boston coach Doc Rivers said. "And one day, we asked him what his name was and he said, 'Celtic.' And everyone just started laughing. All I'm trying to do is get him to forget about trying to be something he isn't -- and just be someone for the team."

Rivers added, "He's got a lot of stuff on his shoulders and we're trying to unload all of that. You go in front of Carmelo and all you're going to do is hear that. That can get old. We're trying to get him to move out of that."

What's helped is that he's been very receptive to Garnett's tutelage and looking to fill that very specific role on this team:

"I'm excited to learn from him, but I'm excited to learn from everybody else, too,'' Milicic said of Garnett. "That's what Boston is all about. It's not about one guy. It's about everybody. Whatever my job is going to be -- if I have to get into the game and kill somebody, I kill him."

Garnett said he has been a Milicic fan for a long time and that he was eager to introduce the center to the so-called "Celtic Way." He sees what Danny Ainge saw when Ainge made the offer (a one-year deal) to Milicic. He sees what Rivers sees. There is talent in there.

"Right now, he probably lacks a little bit of self-confidence,'' Garnett said. "And I will help with that. I'll do as much as I can to influence him and encourage him. But it's going to take something from him, too. He's never been around a team like this. He's never been around guys like this. He's never been in a situation where there is so much energy and encouragement."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PLAY BY PLAY team scrimmages in Istanbul

1st/2nd unit combo > Rondo-Lee-Pierce-Bass-Garnett-Terry-Green-Milicic
3rd unit > Collins + Rookies + Camp Invitees
sat out > Chris Wilcox / Avery Bradley (injured)

Game 1 – 6 minutes
Dionte Christmas banged in a 3-pointer from the top of the key – off the glass, no less – to help the third unit win the first game by a score of 14-11. The first-second unit hybrid team had a chance to tie the game on the final possession, but Pierce and Rajon Rondo each missed 3-pointers.

Game 2 – 6 minutes
The first-second unit must have been motivated from that loss in Game 1, because it came back strong in Game 2. Boston’s top players won the second contest by a score of 12-8, and Milicic shined toward the end of the matchup by successfully defending guard Dionte Christmas on the perimeter, then blocking his shot attempt, to seal the win.

Game 3 – 1 minute
Rivers created a situational contest by putting one minute on the clock and giving the third unit an 86-83 lead. Garnett began the game by making just one of four free throws (he actually should have shot 0-of-4 from the line, but he capitalized on a lane violation by Fab Melo) to bring the score to 86-84. After that performance, Rivers joked to Garnett that, "They’ll be coming out with hack-a-Garnett pretty soon."

Jamar Smith made a free throw for the third unit to make it 87-84, and then Rondo was put on the line with just a few seconds left in the game. He made the first shot, then attempted to miss the second, but the shot accidentally fell through the net to make it 87-86. Rondo nearly stole the inbounds pass to Kris Joseph, but Joseph corralled the pass and kicked it ahead to Christmas, who dribbled out the clock to give the third unit a 2-1 series advantage.

Game 4 – 4 minutes
Rivers put four minutes on the clock and instructed his players that they would be drawing up the plays during timeouts. Jason Terry drew up the first play for the first-second unit, which led to a wide-open jumper for Garnett. Terry would score on his unit’s next possession to make it 4-0, and then Rob Kurz scored on a driving layup for the third unit to make it 4-2.

Then the highlight came.

Rondo drew up a play during a timeout and it worked to perfection. Jeff Green ducked to the basket and caught a perfect pass from a teammate and slammed home a reverse dunk that got some teammates fired up. Pierce tacked on a free throw to make it a 7-2 game, and that was the final score.

Fab Melo Passes First Test
By Jeff Clark on Oct 2, 6:59p

A young big man gets one chance to listen to KG's instructions. If you don't he's done with you for all time.
Melo listened, so he passed his first test.

The Celtics flew for 11 hours to get to Turkey and in order to acclimate the team to the time change, Doc Rivers had the team stay up and head right to practice.
I'm sure that practice wasn't the most productive one, but here's one interesting tid-bit.

Kevin Garnett talks turkey with Fab Melo - BostonHerald.com
And no sooner had practice broke — the heavy stuff won’t be applied until tomorrow — than a bespectacled Garnett had Fab Melo over in one corner of the floor, attempting to teach the rookie the proper way to post up against an arm-barring defender. Melo, his eyes glued to Garnett’s every move, has obviously passed the first test. KG wants to teach him.

You've gotta think that this kid is dead tired. KG? He doesn't really sleep. I think he just roams around his house at night watching game tape and muttering things to himself that are unprintable . But Melo is a normal human being and you have to imagine that he was ready to find a nice soft pillow and call it a day.

Still, he had his "eyes glued" to Garnett and passed KG's infamous test. You know, the one where a young big man gets one chance to listen to him, and if you don't he's done with you for all time?

Basically, if you and I know about this test, and Doc feels comfortable enough to talk about it with the media, then Melo's agent has certainly heard of it. In fact, I'm sure the staff pulled him aside and told him, "if you want to see one minute of action this year, you will listen to every word this man says."

You know what? Scratch that last sentence. Maybe all of that happened, or maybe not. Who in their right mind would refuse to listen to Kevin Garnett if he wants to teach you about playing basketball? Well, rumor has it Patrick O'Bryant for one, but that's ancient history. Every year could be KG's last, and if you have a chance to play with him for a year, or a few months, or a few days, you soak up everything or you aren't worth anything. Period.

So, now we know that Melo is at least smarter than O'Bryant. Then again, Ryan Hollins was an eager pupil too, so you have to have some talent to translate it to success on the court. I think Melo has more talent than either one of those guys, so that's a good sign. How good remains to be seen. He's taken the first step. Next is preseason action. This should be educational for him and for us.

CELTICS ARE SORRY FOR THEIR LOSS
By Jeff Clark on Oct 03, 11:00pm

A few weeks before the beginning of new exciting season, our green men have to face an unexpected situation.

Boston survived to the retirement of Larry Bird, faced the trade of Scalabrine, and I'm sure we will one day forgive Ray Allen. But will we be strong enough to advance without our biggest fan ?
Let me use my poor french to say that a Beantow Supacrew without Baz "est comme un repas sans fromage".

Currently in Turkey with his team, Rondo, who made a trip specially to Paris to see him last summer, can not hide his sadness : "Well, I'm loosing words here bro. It ain't gonna be the same for us now, our green is a bit less green. But hey, he is like all of us, instinctive, passionate and proud. He is a Celtics, man"

Voilà, you were, you are and you will be a Celtic.

Be back soon Baz!
